I drove the Porsche haltingly to East London with only one mishap, making contact with a lamppost, shearing the bumper clean off and removing the paint from the left side of the car.

I found the neighborhood Logan suggested, and I parked. I left the keys in the ignition, the motor on, and the driver’s door wide open and walked away, just like I was instructed.

By the time I was halfway down the block, I heard the Porsche whisk away, now the proud possession of a street thug. Poor guy. He thought he got a prize, but he would soon be descended on by a band of mercenaries out for blood.

I walked the short distance to the address Logan gave me for the doctor’s office. It turned out to be little better than the safe house. The waiting room was nondescript but not dirty. There was no receptionist, no bell, no chairs, and no other patients.

I was about to yell out "You-hoo" when I heard voices in the other room. I realized with a start that one of the voices belonged to Kevin Ackley, and he didn’t sound happy. Neither did the other voice, the one I assumed was the doctor’s. In fact, the doctor was begging for his life.

“I swear I don’t know anything about it. I didn’t get a call about a bullet wound tonight.” The scenario was familiar. I didn’t think it would end very well for the doctor. I ran out of the office to a pay phone. I called the fire department and told them that there was a fire at the doctor’s office. That would stir things up and get the doctor help.

Help for Logan was less obvious. I didn't know where to go. I didn't know anybody in London who wasn't a homicidal maniac. Deanna had contacts, but she was out of the country—I didn’t know where—on business. I should have called the police right then and there, but that would bring Logan’s whereabouts out in the open. And I also thought about Brodie. Whose word would the police believe, that of the American woman or the English lord and respected political figure?

I racked my brain and came up with one name. Amy. My trusty secretary would do anything for me. Besides, she knew everybody in London, and she could easily get a doctor.

I called her cell, but it went right to voice mail. I hung up. It wasn't easy to figure out what message to leave. Hi, just calling to let you know that my friend has been shot and beaten, and I need a doctor but not a doctor who will talk to the police. No, that wouldn't do. I thought about it awhile and called her back. The phone went right to voice mail again.

"Amy, it's me, Abby. Listen, I'm doing just fine, but I have a little medical emergency. Nothing serious, mind you, but I need a doctor. Somebody discreet. Do you know any? Can you give me their number or tell them to call me? I'll be at this number.
